(3) Foreigners know our country by the name ‘India’. The Sanskrit word of this name is derived from the word ‘Sindhu’. Foreigners were first introduced to Indians living on the banks of the Indus river in India and based on the name of the Indus river, they named this country and called them ‘Hindu’. . Gradually the name of this country came to be ‘Hindustan’. The Greeks and Romans used to pronounce the word ‘Hindu’ as ‘Indus’. The modern word India is derived from this word ‘Indus’.
